PHILADELPHIA – Delaware South won its opening game in the Phillies Carpenter Cup baseball tournament on Tuesday, as Sussex Tech catcher Colin Bergh went 3 for 3 with four RBIs in a 10-4 victory over Berks County (Pa.) at FDR Park.
It marked the first time since 2006 that Delaware South had won a first-round game. Delaware South will meet the Philadelphia Catholic League in the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. Friday. A victory there would launch the team into the semifinals, to be played at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park.
Delaware South banged out 15 hits, and four pitchers combined to limit Berks County to just five hits.
Berks County scored a run in the first, but Delaware South answered with three in the third. Polytech’s Carter Chasanov singled and stole second, and Sussex Tech’s Luke Oliphant walked. Then Smyrna’s Jared Gillis delivered a two-out single to score Chasanov. Seaford’s Justin Gray was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Bergh singled up the middle to drive in two.
Carpenter Cup softball rosters announced
Delaware South broke it open with four more runs in the fifth. Caesar Rodney’s Quintin Ivy doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Gillis walked and stole second, and Bergh drove in both runners with another single. Then Appoquinimink’s John Weglarz doubled to score Bergh, and Smyrna’s Ryan Seymour doubled to bring home Weglarz.
Sussex Tech’s Kyle Lux added an RBI single in the seventh. In the eighth, Ivy singled, stole second and third and scored on an error. Then Milford’s Ethan Hurd walked, scooted to third on a double by Polytech’s Cole Garey and scored Delaware South’s final run on a wild pitch.
Delaware North lost its Carpenter Cup opener on Wednesday morning, falling 4-1 to Inter-Ac/Independents (Pa.). Archmere’s Joe Singley doubled home St. Mark’s Andrew Reich, who’d doubled, for Delaware North’s lone run in the sixth inning.
